I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight.
Hear that sound playing at the beginning of the track and a beautiful cello melody? That’s me. And it wasn’t easy. The track had had a tortuous journey up to that point and I encountered it (sans intro) at Air Studios in Oxford street. Back in those days, recorded to two inch tape, if you wanted to insert an intro where none existed before, you had to hope there was enough tape to accommodate this extra piece. There was, but just enough to play that length of intro with no click as a guide to the upcoming tempo of the existing track. The options were a multitrack edit and this was considered too risky at the time. We rolled the tape back as far as it would go before unspooling and I started playing. It took several goes before I got it exactly right but I’m very proud of the fact that there ISN’T a join and when the chorus comes in “Oh I… I just died in your arms tonight, it’s seamless and one take!
